The Williams/Foster...Experience

Eleven years has passed quickly by and Jerry Foster and myself have known each other through the Internet.  We first met online at another Forum dedicated to Magic.  We exchanged email addresses and phone numbers and kept in contact all those years.  Recently, I took a trip to California to help my Mom celebrate her 90th Birthday.  Jerry also resides in California, so I thought it was the perfect opportunity to finally meet face to face (live and in person).  Jerry was kind enough to drive…

Let's Elevate Our Magic

Many magicians may be their own worst enemy. (Now, naturally, I’m not talking about you, or me.) Their acts are rampant with stereotypical behaviors that often cause their audiences to roll their eyes. Audiences are sick of innuendo… Continue

Finding your style as a 21st Century Magician

There are lots of mistaken impressions about magicians. Chief among them is the idea that they are here only to "fool" audiences. Anyone past the age of 10 who watches a magician perform knows intuitively that there’s some kind of… Continue

The Eye Sees What It Expects To See

The coin didn’t vanish because the hand is quicker than the eye. Magic is successful because the spectator’s attention is misdirected. It is their own brain that deceives them. Our audience sees with their mind which sorts what they see into understandable images.

Because the mind sees… Continue

Magic Evolution And You

The idea of bending reality is simply another evolution in the performing of magic. The magic doesn’t have to change; just our way of presenting itReality Benders are simply evolved magicians. (For those… Continue

Venturing into New Grounds

I am known as a close up card magician. I am really into cards more than any type of magic. Lately I have been rereading other books on magic theory and more on presentation points. Most of this books are more on mentalism and this has made me think that I could incorporate more of this mind-reading and mental effects into my routine.

There are two things which made me venture into learning mental effects. One is my left wrist had an injury and I might now be able to do card…

What I want in a magic book

As you may know, I learned magic from books and I have a lot of books and e-books on magic. Unfortunately, I don't find all the material that's in there useful. There are just a lot of bad tricks in there that are not really performable in shows.

There are a lot of bad magic books out there. Some have bad photos, bad instructions and the worst is a lot has bad tricks in them. With a lot of bad things in a lot of magic books, I really can't blame those who prefer to learn from… Continue

A tip to be a successful magician: Interaction

One thing I noticed with good magicians is that they are able to maintain a certain level of interaction with their audiences. They are able to make their audiences participate and interact with them that they are not just performing but leaving the audience an experience.

This brings me to think that magic is not just performing but having interaction to leave your audience with an unforgettable and magical experience. Though I heard a lot about the magic moment within a…

Childrens ministry and illusion

I am always looking for opportunities to network with others who want to try and reach our children with the gospel through the art of illusion. It is my true joy to work with God's kids. The problem is that although i have some talent in the area of speaking to children, illusion, clowing and illustrative preaching, I lack the creativity to develope routines. Once I have been introduced to a basic routine I have no trouble adapting it into a gospel message. I am always trying reach out in… Continue

The 2 out of 8 rule

I've read a text by Scott Adams on his Book The Joy of Work. This is about bringing humor to the workplace. He cites that if there are 2 of at the 6 types of humor then it would really be funny. I think that the same rule could be applied to magic.

In Magic there are eight basic effects namely:
1. Production
2. Vanish
3. Transformation
4, Transposition
5. Levitation/Animation
6. Prediction
7.…

Performing for laymen

I really don't like the term "laymen" being used in a wrong by some magicians. It gives a sense of mediocrity and usually that what makes a bad magician. The term laymen was used to describe the people who don't know how an effect works and that's what give that false sense of security to some magicians. The "Don't worry they don't know" is really just a sorry excuse for not mastering the effect itself. Relying on that thought sets your mind to be okay to do mistakes that might reveal how the… Continue

Magic E-books for learning

I actually download a lot of e-books over the internet. Unfortunately not all are good material and worse some are really just a waste of money. I'm writing this post to give fellow magicians advice on the things to consider when buying…

The importance of knowing and doing well a lot of sleights or moves

I am currently reading two new magic books containing more advanced material for both card and close up magic. Reading these books made me realize the importance on how when I was just starting to learn, I tried to learn a lot of moves rather than the effects themselves. I invested a lot of time studying, dissecting every effect into each move, memorizing them and applying them to other effects (both original and adapted) so that it would be more convenient and natural for me when doing… Continue

Conceptual or Visual Learner...Is There A Right Way?

There has been an ongoing debate within the Magic Community. The arguement centers around Books and Visual Media. The question at the nucleus? Is it better to learn Magic from the written word (Books) or to learn our art watching DVD's, Videos and Instant Downloads?

There are many Magicians, like myself, who learned Magic from reading tome after tome. There were none of the modern day gadgets like iPods, DVD Players, Blue Rays etc. to help supplement our learning. When I…

SUMMER WINDING DOWN

This was a very excellent summer. The weather was picture perfect: hot and sunny during the day cool at night.

My magic took me across Ohio many many times. The comment I heard over and over from camps, libraries and municipal functions was "Wow I am so glad you arrived early and you were ready for the show at the time we hired you for." Now I would think that if you were a performer you would show up and be ready to go on at your set time. But in talking with many I guess a lot of people… Continue

Jeff McBride's Magic Wonderground

I thought I would tell everyone that I attended this show. McBride showcases various Magicians, along with other variety acts and puts them all together for a great show. Jeff McBride's Magic Wonderground is currently playing here in Las Vegas, Nevada. The show is scheduled every third Thursday, each month. So, if you are planning to visit Las Vegas...make sure to plan your trip accordingly. McBride's Magic Wonderground is at The Olive (a Hookah Lounge in Henderson, Nevada). The lounge is…

Magic on Long Island

I had a boat load of magic shows on Long Island this week, but one show stands out. I was hired to do a one hour show for a family event. It was a good mix of kids and adults out in Medford, about 50 people all together.

I opened with a simple vanishing and reappearing silk that changes into a sponge ball. It's a routine I worked out by doing a zillion kid shows and busking all over Manhattan. No great "moves" but it's a visual… Continue

Working the venues

Greetings fellow artist I have a rant to throw at you this evening. When you perform magic do you have a show or do you just throw out a bunch of tricks one after the other.

When I first started doing magic shows in 1977 I would do a whole lot of magic tricks in a hours time. Now I can do an hour show with four or five items that are all related together one after the other. Martin Nash (Canadian Card Expert) once told me he loved to read Shakespeare and that each of his…
