Hi Robert Ace,

With regards to lack of tables for a sponge ball routine, you could always use your audience's hands. I tend to do this a lot especially when the table is full of food during my table hopping shows.

I hope this helps.

Sponge balls has acually becomed my most asked for effect to date. It get's the most laughes and ooh:es.
So it will defently stay as a permanent part of my close-up table routine.
But does anyone got any tips for a stand-up routine? I'm often annoyed by the lack of tables when I'm asked to show some magic and I want to do some sponge balls.

I have developed my own sponge ball routine. Occationally I add onto it or do it slightly different but this is the basic routine. I would like to know what magicians think of it. I know it blows laymen except they don't always fall for the retention vanishes. (I suck at misdirection.) This is it.

Routine- The magician shows front and back of hand's to be empty and clean. Then proceeds by making a fist and opening it to show that a spongeball appeared. He then puts it in the other hand and makes it vanish into the right trouser pocket. Placed into the left hand. They try to guess which hand it is in but no matter which hand they guess they are wrong.

Because he has two one in each hand. Then the magician say's he doesn't need the other one. So he put's it in the right trouser pocket. Then he proceeds by making a sawing motion with the finger turning the other one into two. Places one of the spongeballs into his right trouser pocket again.

Then the magician grab's the remaining spongeball with both hands. Takes it and rips it in two. Then grabs one spongeball places it somewhere out of the way. So he is free to grab the one from the right hand with the left hand. Puts it in the left trouser pocket. Then explains how he will make it go through the fabric of his pocket then does so.

The magician proceeds by placing the two spongeballs in the spectators hand. Tells him or her to hold tightly so they can't escape or be touched in any way. Then grabs a third sponge ball from his right trouser pocket. Vanishes the ball into the two in the spectators hand and makes three spongeballs. Grabs all three spongeballs with hand to open it and reveal four balls. For the Last move the magician places three in the hand. Then one in the right trouser pocket. Opens his hand to show all four vanished. After he explained he would make the spongeball in the pocket go to the ones in the hand invisibly. Just like in the last move in the spectator’s hand but in his.

Preparation- Place one ball in the left trouser pocket. Then two in the right trouser pocket with the last sponge ball in the left hand palming position for the production.

Secret- Start with the left hand with ball palmed. Pointing openly relaxed casually towards the right hand. The right hand is open and relaxed as well. Except it is palm up and straight forward. Proceed from that position by transferring the ball from the left hand to the right secretly.

You accomplish this by rotating the hands. Rotate the hand’s counter clockwise into the opposite position with palms touching. That way you may secretly transfer the spongeball. Proceed by making a fist. Do this while right hand is palm down. That way you are sure the audience won’t see the ball as you make a fist.

Then turn right hand fist which contains the spongeball over. Open fist and reveal spongeball. The vanish is a typical thumb palm vanish. So the spongeball is retained in the right hand. You say it is in the right trouser pocket. Reach in and retrieve on of the two balls in the pocket.

Leaving the one palmed in the right hand. Place the ball in the left hand leaving the one palmed. With both palms turned make fists. Your palms are turned down so that they don’t see the spongeball that they are not supposed to be aware of until later. Next have them guess which hand.

As you know nowmatter which hand they guess they are wrong. You open the opposite hand in which they guessed. That way they think you transferred it from one hand to the other. Then reveal the two you have. Place one spongeball into the right trouser pocket. Only retain ball in palming position.

Pick up the other spongeball with guilty hand. Only hold both balls squeezed together as one. Place them side by side in left hand. Do so while keeping pressure on them with pointer finger that way they don’t separate and still look like one. Procede by making a sawing motion with the pointer finger. In doing so it appears as though you have just sawed one ball in two.

Pretend to place one ball in the right trouser pocket as before. Do another two as one pickup. Then hold the two spongeballs as one. Do this by having your first and second fingers of each hand on ether hand on both sides of balls with the thumbs behind. Then rip the seemingly one spongeball in two.

Set the left hand spongeball down somewhere. Hold the remaining spongeball in the right hand. Do a French drop vanish. So next you do the ball through pocket move. When you place the supposedly full left hand into the left trouser pocket. You palm the spongeball in there.

You already have one spongeball palmed in the right hand. So when you reach over to the left trouser pocket you pinch the ball between the outer fabric of your pocket. When doing so make sure that fabric on top around your thumb. Is overlapping the bottom fabric. That way they don’t see you pinching the ball in the fabric. It looks like pinched fabric without a ball.

Procede by rubbing fingers together to make it easier. While you slowly remove ball one little bit at a time. Making it seem as though you just make the spongeball go through your pocket. Procede by removing left hand from pocket. “Make sure palmed ball is not seen.”

Pick up other spongeball doing the two as one pick up. Place those two in the spectators hand and say one ball. Tell them to close their hand so it can’t go anywhere. That way they they wont see two and think one. Do the same with the seemingly second ball only say two instead of one.

Reach into the right trouser pocket and retrieve the seemingly third ball. Vanish it by pretending to shove it in the left hand fist between the first finger and thumb using the first finger. While shoving open the fingers of your fist ever so slightly. That way when you shove with your finger you shove it into the palming position of the right hand. Then tell the spectator to open there hand to reveal it traveled into the hand and they now have three instead of two.

With right hand retrieve all three balls adding the palmed one to them. With palm down so that they don’t see the fourth ball yet. You make a fist turn over fist open hand to show four balls. Finish pretending to place first three spongeballs in left hand using a thumb palm vanish. Then place fourth with other three in right trouser pocket. Open hand to show hand empty and that all four vanished.
