Club Magicians

The Definitive Magic Community for Magicians, by Magicians, about Magicians!

Today, I wanted to open a discussion about Reel Magic Magazine. First, let's look at what this is...Simply put, this is billed as "TV For Magicians". Ted Brainard (Kozmo) came up with the idea to present a Magic Magazine and release it as a DVD rather than to print it, in a standard format, such as Genii or Magic Magazine. It has become a very visual way for Magicians to learn about new effects and products, currently on the Market.

While attending Magic Live 2009, I purchased a 1 year subscription to Reel Magic Magazine...which promises 6 Issues for the entire year. The subscription cost $55 Dollars and Kozmo added the extra incentive of 2 Free Issues for signing up...on the spot. This turned out to be a great deal, as the Current Issue is sold separately for $10 Dollars...Back Issues also sell for $10 Dollars each. So, if you were to get 6 issues separately without a subscription, you would pay $60 Dollars. Trust me on this, pay for the Subscription!!

What's inside and Issue? Typically, there is an interview conducted with a well known Magician. The current issue features Daniel Garcia. Previous issues have featured:

Eugene Burger
Chris Kenner
Mike Caveney
Mac King
Paul Harris
...Just to name a few. Each issue has columns relating to different aspects of Magic. Some columns focus on Reviews, Previews and Magic Effects. Each magic effect is demonstrated first and then taught. There have been some really killer effects which have appeared in Reel Magic Magazine...and this current issue features a Daniel Garcia trick called "William Tell" This is a fairly simple effect, but will take practice to learn properly. It alone, was well worth the cover price of this DVD Magazine. The magazine also covers an in-depth study of "Move Monkeys". This sections heralds individuals who have submitted their knuckle busting moves and then has them teach it...should you be daring enough to take on the challenge.

Reel Magic Magazine is a fantastic way to learn about Magic and what goes through the minds of many of its most famous creators. Should you be interested in a subscription, here is a direct link to the Website:
Reel Magic Magazine

I highly recommend Reel Magic Magazine. It is well worth the price of a subscription. I am really looking forward to the next issues in the year to come.

Best Magical Regards,

Mark Williams

Mark ,,,,
Thank you !! for posting this !! I had no idea there was such a Magazine in this format!! does the material shoot more toward stage or close up? or is it a mix of both?? yes,,,,if you can get one trick or one good idea out of each issue, then you have gotten your money's worth!!!!! (please tell me there are no commercials included!)
Thanks Again!

Rodney, Yes, there are effects discussed which Stage Magicians can use. For instance, in the current issue Silly Billy (David Kaye) shows bits of business with a Feather Blooming Flower he uses during Children Shows. As far as commercials, I'd say that there are "plugs" rather than commercials in the traditional sense. My advice would be to purchase an issue of Reel Magic Magazine...either a back issue that might interest you or the current one. Give it a try! For $10 Dollars you really can't go wrong.

Issue 14 of Reel Magic Magazine arrived in my Mailbox the day before Christmas. It truly was a great gift! I know, I know...I already paid for a subscription months ago, but I look forward to receiving each new issue with eager anticipation.

In Issue 14, the second half of the interview with Daniel Garcia is presented, as well as a brand new interview with performer Wayne Dobson. Wayne is from the U.K. and is a highly respected performer of Comedy Magic. His interview centers around the fact that Wayne now suffers from Multiple Sclerosis and his challenges while performing. Wayne only has the use of his left hand, so it makes it even more difficult. I applaud Wayne's bravery for this insightful look into his personal struggles.

Daniel Garcia's interview has Danny proclaiming that "David Blaine single-handedly saved a dying Art". Garcia believes that when Blaine came onto the Magic scene, he jolted the Public's view of Magic into a new lime-light. Daniel also credits Blaine for what Garcia calls the "Great Divide". Danny is convinced that a "Fork In The Road" was created when Blaine spawned a whole new era of "Street Magicians". I urge you to buy this issue of Reel Magic Magazine to find out Garcia's answer to Magicians vs. Street Magicians.

There are some clever effects for you to learn covered in this Issue, as well as some new "Move Monkey" challenges for you to practice. More new reviews and previews are discussed, plus Mac King and David Kaye present a new segment to the Magazine called "Reel Comedy".

This is another must have issue. I highly recommend purchasing a subscription to Reel Magic Magazine...it just keeps getting better and better.
Reel Magic

Mark-

I agree with all you have said about this great idea! Kozmo has done it right, and it just gets better- some new innovations will make it much easier to keep and catalog issues, etc.

Every issue, EVERY issue, contains some pearls that make it well worth the price. Additionally, I can "read" it on the treadmill, something I just can't do with a mag...

We need to support this concept!

Thanks Vynn. I just did a 40th birthday party and decided to do my cut and restored rope as a close up item. I have never had such a strong reaction to that trick in 30 years ... one of the guests kept following me around to watch the rope trick.
