Hi everyone...

I am a professor of communication at Illinois State University. I have only been involved with magic for about a year. I have always enjoyed magic, but only about a year ago did I realize a connection with my profession and magic. As I began to study the "academic" side of magic, I couldn't help but also dabble in some tricks. Now I have learned that it is a ton of fun, and I really enjoy performing in front of friends, family and audiences.

However, I am still concerned with the "academic" side of magic. My current project consists of the "rhetoric of magic" which means how magicians "connect" with their audience. I am interested in how magicians use different techniques to persuade their audience that the "impossible" is possible, or how there really is a "sense of wonder."

If you are a professional magician and would like to help me with my project, I would GREATLY appreciate it. I only have a few questions that will only take about 10 minutes of your time. Of course, you can always opt-out of a question or elaborate depending on your own perspective.

My goal is to produce a book about the matter. I promise to quote and cite folks appropriately. So, this means that when my book is finished, not only will it help magicians with different techniques on how to connect with their audience, but it will also help those magicians who I quote to increase their visibility.

Please let me know if you're interested. You can contact me via email at: zompetti@aol.com

Thanks!

Hello! I am living in Switzerland and working in French-speaking countries. Are magicians from France, Belgium, Quebec… and Switzerland also registered on this site? It would be a pleasure of knowing them.

Je vis en Suisse et je travaille dans les pays francophones. Y-a-t-il des magiciens de France, de Belgique, du Québec... et de Suisse évidemment, inscrit sur ce site? Ce serait un plaisir de faire leur connaissance.

Hi all, great to be a new member here!

I fell in love with magic when my Uncle Jack did a few simple tricks for me as a very young boy. He died when I was still young and left me his magic kit. From that time I studied and practiced on and off to this day, fifty some-odd plus years later.
I worked for Paul Diamond in Ft Lauderdale in the 1960-70s (no pay, just the honor of being allowed to hang out with the "real" magicians and learn from them). In the 90s I started a small clown-magic business as Boffo the Magic Clown. Terrific fun, and another learning experience, if not much money. Now I'm on Whidbey Island in Washington and looking to start up again, this time more emphasis on the comedy magic and a little less of the clown...

Very much looking forward to interacting and learning from folks here!

Hello Clarice.... Just Kidding I am Javier Montelongo here is a way to pronounce it Ha-V-Air just wanted to clarify that. It seems I am the only that is in my magic journey here in Salt Lake City, Utah. You can joke if you'd like. But originally I am from California. I started to do magic when I was fifteen I had blast thanks to the Masked Magician I learned a couple of tricks but I stopped because I grew up to young and thought it was a silly thing to do, Yeah I know at that age my thinking process was messed up. Christmas 2008 came up and my girlfriend bought me Criss Angel's book and since then I have been performing magic my girlfriend said I have been learning really fast but I can't agree I am my own worst critic. I love street magic and close-up not a fan of stage though I have performed it's ok not my favorite though so that's me. I know a lot of nothing
