I have always had a passion for magic but never practiced it until I met a "professional magician" (his words). He was pretty good. In 2001 he needed a seamstress, so we bartered. I sewed props for him and he threw me a magic trick every once in a while. I "entertained" (my words) my friends and family. Then 6 months into it my husband died. I didn't care for any extra-cirricular "hobbies" for years. I still sewed awhile for Mike but then he moved away and so did my passion for magic. I saw celebrity cadabra and something in me fired up and then I found this site. I want sooo much to do kids magic. Kids are involved in every part of my life. (See my lame profile.) I love to watch kids at magic shows. I love the wonder in their eyes and they are all seeing themselves up there performing. As I am 52 and just starting I'll need all the help I can get and I hope to get a lot here. Thanks
Doing magic for kids is a very different thing than doing magic for adults. Adults are easier to fool with magic because we have so much information in our minds to sort through. Kids minds are not overloaded with "stuff" so they can go right to the way a trick is done. For that reason you need to do magic that is more play than mystery. Make it fun. Do simple things and play. You need to have fun with them and they will have fun with you. Try to be a "show-off" and look smart and they will give you a hard time.
Look in the Library for Magic books to start learning basics. That is a good way to start.

Hello everyone,
Glad to see so many new faces and members. Thanks to all those who have added me as a friend. Hope we can share some great ideas. Sorry it has been awhile since I had time to chat. The Dogwood Festival here in Charlottesville, VA is over and I can slow down for awhile. Between working street magic at the downtown mall and working a new night job, I haven't had much time to breath. But, I have compiled some of the Lecture notes from last nights IBM 320 Teach-In by David Clauss. They can be found at http://homepage.mac.com/gbbuckley under Blue Ridge Card Effects. I will try to add some actual "effects" to the notes as I can get time. David Clauss held an excellent class in the basics of card magic. We went over quite a few basic moves and David supplied us with some hand outs on some of his favorite moves from Jerry Mentzer's "Counts, Cuts, Moves and Subtlety". This is an excellent book for anyone wishing to learn card moves. David is very accomplished at card magic and he provided some excellent "hands on" teaching last night. The notes I have posted on our archives are the student handouts I produced for the class I taught to earn my certification as an Instructor at the Shennandoah Criminal Justice Training Academy. We had to pick a subject, develop the curriculum, and teach a class of students. All of which was graded. My subject was card magic. I hope you can learn a bit from the notes, remember start small, learn the basics, and practice-practice-practice. You will also find last months notes on coin magic. These should be excellent material for any beginner or seasoned magician wanting to learn the basics of a new area. Let me know if I can help or answer any questions. Secret #1 - Never show anyone how it's done. They will beg you and flatter you for the secret, but as soon you give it up, you will be nothing to them. You will have worked hard for the secret and they will have it for free. The secret impresses no one, the trick you use it for and the story you tell is everything.
As a side note I agree with Jack Shea on performing for children. For those of you wanting to perform for your children, try your favorite coin or card slight with color cards or color disks. Most children don't know much about coins or card suits, but they do know and love colors. I produce a color version of Copper/Silver with Red and Green holographic disks the same size as half dollars. Kids love the Red light/Green light effect I perform and I have even had adults follow the moves better than with coins. Well, anyway I hope this helps. Again glad to see so many new members. Check out the discussion groups and share your ideas. Hope to see you on the streets.
My name's Shawn. I'm from the US and I've been studying magic for approx 20 years now. Don't get the chance to perform very often, maybe on a night out or if friends are hanging out. I specialize in close-up cards, though have started to move on to a few mentalism effects and I am currently working on a Linking Rings routine before moving on to Zombie Ball and Cups and Balls.

Thanks Vynn. I just did a 40th birthday party and decided to do my cut and restored rope as a close up item. I have never had such a strong reaction to that trick in 30 years ... one of the guests kept following me around to watch the rope trick.
Hijinx,
I feel your pain and with experience I have decided that I will not do just walk around close up magic for a group of less than 75. Depending on the crowd there are many different directions you can go. On my web page I give one direction a…
