Alert; should I cancel my order or get the tricks?

Hello everyone. I did a blunder; I ordered the gecko and the tarantula. I have no previous experience with gimmicks like those, then AFTER ordering I remembered to check reviews and such. Then I noticed it was a lot of mixed opinions.

The Gecko: Many people where annoyed at a noice it made and said it was way below their expectations. Some even hated it. But some said they loved it, and I watched a lot of videos for the gecko contest and they seemed good.

The tarantula: First I mostly found positive reviews on it. Even a positive one from a complete newbie at IT (like myself, never touch such a gimmick to this point). Then I found a review here stating that it was not recommended for beginners at IT and that it was mostly an add on to another gimmick in means of many effects.

So I turn to you for advice; Should I let the order ride, and master the gimmicks (remember I've mostly worked gimmick less in the past) . Or should I cancel my order and save my money to something else (recommendations?)

Thanks for all replies

The only way you will find out about thread is to try it. I did and don't like it so I use other methods though not as amazing. These are pricey items and if you can change your order with them I would. Vernet Mini Zombie is good.
The Thing by Bill Abbott is good too if you can find one.Now you have to buy the upgrade kit also with it which jacks the price up about $75.00 U.S. You would have to put the time into making it smooth but it comes with an instructional DVD.
That is if you MUST float something. I avoid all body hook ups but I may try one of those P.K. wrist /knee bands.
Any way you approach it you will have to work at it. Think of it as a puppet that helps the illusion. It is also a way of psychologically "separating it "from you. I would recommend the dancing hanky by fantasma to start. Thread you have the knack or you don't. I spend over $200.00 trying to learn figuring it was a good investment if I could pull it off. Well for me it didn't turn out that well as I am sure it is that way for a lot of us.
Check out my recommended tricks and books in my group. I do keep adding to these lists and they don't make it there unless I myself have used it in performance. Never mind what's new, what's good is what you should ask yourself. Do you have a chop cup? Leave a question on my group if you need more help. I would also ask the guys in the thread group as they are a lot more knowledgeable about this form of the art than I.

Thanks Phil :)
You're right it's all about what works for you.
However this is another thing; The "groups" button seems to has vanished from the site (kind of ironic when I think about it) so I can't get to any groups at the moment.
Is it just me that has that problem?

Hi guys,

I have groups back... I'm even mystified as to the disappearance of Groups! Still researching what happened there!

I have the Gecko and I have a review here at the groups section. I would say that if you're a beginner better consider about buying it first because it involves more basic skills and lots of practice. I love the Gecko but as Jim Rosenbaum have said it is not just a gimmick it is a utility tool more than anything else.

Robert,

Unfortunately you have been a victim of marketing. There are less expensive ways to explore the types of magic that you can perform with those two devices. If you don't like the kinds of magic you do with these then it was an expensive lesson.

Fortunately you have made a good purchase since both fall into the category of "utility devices". In other words, you didn't buy a packet trick that only does one thing, you purchased devices that let you perform many different effects. Both come with great instructions on how to use the devices and good instructions on achieving specific effects. All the effects you can do with these devices were not covered so with a little imagination, the sky is the limit. If you like challenges and don't mind practicing, then you have two of the greatest utility devices a magician can own, regardless of the marketed brand name.

When looking at reviews on "utility devices" you should not be concerned so much with the effect they used to market it with. You should look for people who speak of its quality of construction, practicality, limitations, etc.

Until we appear again,
Kipp Sherry

Thanks everyone for your answers. I went away for a while there. But anyhow, I think I'll let the order ride (they have also already sent it) I'm not sure what effects that fits me yet. I feel my way through magic. But I like the effect of making things diseaper into nothing, and floating seems nice as well. I think I could make good with those sorts of effects. So I assume that with practice, and the instruction videos (as well as the animated miracle I'll get with the tarantula) I can master these utility devices.

Still please leave your thoughts, I'm still as interested to know your opinion on the order, as well as the products themselves.

FYI .......next time you order try www.magic.org and order there....
if you don't like or can't work the product you can return it for a credit towards your next purchase (you can't get your money back, but you do get a credit)....I have found Aaron and his gang are very nice and understanding to work with! (no I don't own the website! I am just a fan...)

Thanks Vynn. I just did a 40th birthday party and decided to do my cut and restored rope as a close up item. I have never had such a strong reaction to that trick in 30 years ... one of the guests kept following me around to watch the rope trick.
