Fellow member, Kacey, enjoys crafting and constructing magic effects. She has posted an excellent question under the Magic Inventors/Creators Group asking if anyone knows of any jobs or internships in the Los Angeles, CA area. This is the type of question that would be perfectly ok to post under this discussion as well.

I have posted some posters in popular stores around town for my kids show, and have gotten zero response, why?

Jesse,

You don't give enough information for me to tell you why.

What do your posters say?
If they only say "Magician For Hire, Call 555-5555", then you probably won't get much response.

How long have they been up?
Birthdays only happen once a year, so someone who reads it this week may not need your services for up to 12 months later.

I have found that word of mouth works much better than posters anyways. When I do a birthday party, the parents who see me want to book me for their kids party. I usually get 1-3 additional bookings off of each party I do. It takes a while to build up your reputation so be patient.

Jesse... Kipp is right. Word of mouth is always the best way. If you haven't developed enough mouths (that have seen you perform) to pass the word along effectively, you might consider putting yourself into situations where you could be seen by lots of people. If you have magic you could do while walking through a crowd.... take yourself to a flea market or craft show and start by doing a trick for someone in the crowd. You could even do this at your local mall... and when better than the holidays when the malls are packed! How about the Fourth of July.... lots of people just waiting to be amazed! People will love it and you can pass out business cards to people that have actually seen you. It's just an idea, but it won't cost you much to give it a try! >^..^<</body>

Kipp hit it on the nail! Also a small add in the local paper or if you have a kids publication would be much more effective.

I use to do a lot of kids shows, now I only do about a dozen a year, the reason is similar to what Kipp suggested. I slowly built up my adult shows and now it is all word of mouth or through an agent.

Oh the great Kipp has spoken and very wisely. LOL

I had the same response for my first show - last Saturday, how discouraging. There has got to be a better way.
